Every year, we hear about more innocent people being released from prison in the United
States. Today there are over 400 exonerated men and women who have been wrongly convicted and victimized by our criminal justice
system. On average, each has served more than ten years in prison before being released.
After being incarcerated for crimes they did not commit, exonerees are faced with an even tougher
battle. They must readjust to a world that isn’t waiting with open arms - in most cases, it’s the opposite.
The challenges that await exonerees are often difficult for them to overcome.
The pressure of finding employment and gaining access to assistance for medical
treatment, dental treatment, housing and counseling are just a few typical hurdles.
Resurrection After Exoneration's (RAE) mission is to promote and sustain a network
of support among the formerly incarcerated, reconnect them to the community and help provide access to educational opportunities
and counseling.
RAE is an offspring of the non-profit law office, Innocence
Project New Orleans (IPNO). IPNO created Inside/Out , an exoneree advocacy program.
The exonerated members of Inside/Out banded together to create this supportive outreach
program: RAE.
